Despite recent speculation linking the Golden State Warriors to Domantas Sabonis, a blockbuster trade for the All-Star center appears unlikely, according to a report from NBA insider Jake Fischer. The rumors emerged as the Sacramento Kings are reportedly prepared to make Sabonis and other veterans available before the mid-season trade deadline.
However, Fischer indicates the Warriors are not expected to pursue a deal for the 6’10” center. He questions the logic of Golden State parting with significant roster assets for a player who may not fit their system. “How many valued elements of its roster would the Warriors truly be willing to part with for a center who isn’t a floor-spacer or a rim protector?” Fischer noted.
The high cost of a potential trade was highlighted in a recent proposal by Forbes’ Evan Sidery, which would send Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody to Sacramento. Beyond the loss of key young players, Sabonis presents several on-court and financial concerns for the Warriors. His lack of outside shooting could create spacing issues alongside Draymond Green, and his defensive limitations do not address the team’s needs. Furthermore, Sabonis is owed more than $95 million over the two seasons following the current one, a substantial financial commitment.
While Golden State may be active before the deadline, the trade speculation likely stems more from the Kings’ reported interest in acquiring Kuminga than from the Warriors’ pursuit of Sabonis. A future deal between the two teams involving Kuminga is still possible, but it is highly improbable that Sabonis would be included in the transaction.
