The Dallas Wings are finalizing a deal to hire Jose Fernandez, the longtime head coach of the University of South Florida women’s basketball team, as their new head coach, a source confirmed Thursday. While the contract was not signed as of Thursday afternoon, it is expected to be completed as soon as Friday.
Fernandez will be the fifth head coach in seven seasons for the Wings, a franchise seeking stability as it builds around star player and former No. 1 draft pick Paige Bueckers. Sources said the team prioritized a candidate with extensive head coaching experience, a record of sustained success, and an international reach.
Over a 25-year tenure at South Florida, Fernandez transformed the program into one of the nation’s top mid-majors, compiling a 485-317 record and leading the Bulls to 10 NCAA tournament appearances, including eight in the past 11 years.
USF confirmed Fernandez’s departure in a statement. “Over the past 25 years, Jose has been an exceptional leader, mentor and advocate for the University of South Florida,” said athletics CEO Rob Higgins. “His impact on USF Athletics and our university community is profound.” Michele Woods-Baxter was named the program’s interim head coach.
The hiring follows the Wings’ decision to part ways with Chris Koclanes after just one season, in which the team finished in last place with a 10-34 record. Dallas currently holds the best odds to secure the top pick in the upcoming WNBA draft lottery.
