A significant weather system brought widespread rain and severe thunderstorms to the Northland region of Minnesota and Wisconsin on Tuesday, July 15, with stormy conditions persisting into Wednesday.
The system originated with strong thunderstorms near the U.S.-Canada border before moving into Minnesota’s Arrowhead region on Tuesday morning. After a brief lull, the storms re-intensified during the afternoon, prompting the National Weather Service to issue multiple watches and warnings for severe conditions and potential flooding across both states.
Substantial rainfall was recorded across the area, with some locations receiving over five inches of rain by Wednesday morning. According to National Weather Service data as of 9 a.m. on July 16, a location 10 miles east of Gordon, Wisconsin, reported the highest total at 5.23 inches. An area 13 miles east of Solon Springs in Bayfield County recorded 5.11 inches. Other significant rainfall amounts included 4.37 inches near Aurora, Minnesota, and 4.18 inches near Knife River. Numerous other communities in Douglas, Bayfield, St. Louis, and Lake counties saw totals between 2.5 and 4 inches.
In addition to heavy rain, the system produced other severe weather on Tuesday. Wind gusts of 52 mph were reported near Ashland, Wisconsin. Hail was also observed, with stones measuring up to 0.88 inches in diameter recorded near Wrenshall, Minnesota.
