ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Heavy storms swept through the St. Louis region Sunday afternoon, causing flash flooding on several city roadways and prompting temporary closures.
The eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 near St. Louis Avenue were shut down for approximately 30 minutes due to significant standing water. The flooding began around 3:30 p.m., with Missouri Department of Transportation cameras capturing St. Louis firefighters clearing drains to allow traffic to resume by 4:00 p.m.
The St. Louis Police Department reported responding to multiple flooded locations across the city, including North Tucker and North 13th Street. The Office of Public Safety also confirmed high water at 13th Street and Cole as well as Jefferson Avenue and Madison.
Both police and fire officials issued public safety warnings, urging drivers to avoid flooded streets. “It is extremely dangerous,” the police department stated in a social media post. “Turn around don’t drown!”
