The Chicago area is bracing for severe weather on Wednesday afternoon, following a hot and humid day with temperatures expected to reach the low 90s.
According to forecasters, strong to severe thunderstorms are possible between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. The primary threat is damaging high winds, though heavy rainfall leading to localized flooding and an isolated tornado are also possibilities. Much of the Chicago area is under a Level 2 risk for severe weather, with a lower Level 1 risk for northwest Indiana and some southern suburbs.
The potential for storms will continue into Thursday. An unsettled weather pattern is expected through the weekend, with scattered showers and thunderstorms in the forecast. The highest chance of rain is anticipated on Saturday.
These conditions follow a hot and humid Tuesday, where temperatures hovered around 90 degrees and heat index values pushed into the mid-90s in some locations. An Air Quality Alert also remains in effect for the region, though air quality has improved since Monday.
