The San Jose Sharks have acquired veteran forward Ryan Reaves from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for defenseman Henry Thrun, General Manager Mike Grier announced.
Reaves, 38, brings a significant physical presence and extensive experience to San Jose, having amassed 137 points (63 goals, 74 assists) and 1,100 penalty minutes over 912 career NHL games with St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Vegas, the New York Rangers, Minnesota, and Toronto.
“We’re excited to welcome Ryan to the organization,” Grier said. “He will bring energy, personality, physical play and toughness to our group. He has been a part of many winning teams, and I witnessed firsthand the positive impact he can bring to a group when I was with the Rangers.”
The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Winnipeg native appeared in 35 games for Toronto last season, recording two assists and 28 penalty minutes. He also played three games for the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, scoring one goal.
Reaves is also a seasoned playoff performer, having reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 14 of his last 15 seasons. In 113 postseason games, he has nine points and 116 penalty minutes, including a memorable series-clinching goal for the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2018 Western Conference Final.
Thrun, who heads to Toronto in the deal, appeared in 119 games for San Jose over three seasons, posting 25 points (five goals, 20 assists). He also tallied six points in 18 games with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda.
