Son Heung-Min, LAFC’s landmark summer signing, has described his move to the MLS club as a “dream come true” following a decade-long tenure with Tottenham Hotspur.
Speaking at his introductory press conference in Los Angeles on Wednesday, the South Korean forward expressed his gratitude and excitement. “I just want to thank the ownership, John [Thorrington], Bennett [Rosenthal]… they’ve been absolutely working so hard to get me here,” Son said. “I’m here, I’m more than happy, and so, so excited seeing all the Korean fans.”
LAFC signed Son as a designated player on a contract through 2027, with an option for 2028 and a further option through June 2029. Sources confirmed the transfer fee paid to Tottenham is approximately $26 million, a new record for an incoming MLS player.
Son, a two-time Player of the Year at Tottenham, admitted his departure from the Premier League club he joined in 2015 was difficult but necessary. “I think it was obviously very emotional because I gave it my all,” he explained. “I just felt like I need a new chapter, I need a new challenge, which is why I chose LAFC.”
Despite his long career, Son asserted he remains in top condition. “I still have a good physicality, good legs, and still have a good quality,” he said, adding that he aims to both perform on the field and mentor younger players.
Having just completed preseason training with his former club, the three-time World Cup participant stated he is ready for his MLS debut. “My fitness is great,” Son confirmed. “I came here to play soccer, and I’m ready to play.”
During his time with Tottenham, Son scored 137 goals across all competitions and became the first Asian player to win the Premier League’s Golden Boot award in the 2021-22 season. At LAFC, he will reunite with former Spurs teammate Hugo Lloris.
Currently sixth in the Western Conference standings, LAFC is scheduled to play Chicago Fire FC on Saturday.
