The Pittsburgh Steelers have released veteran safety Juan Thornhill, who will now be placed on waivers, according to a report from NFL Network.
The release follows a significant reduction in Thornhill’s playing time, as he did not receive any defensive snaps in the team’s last two games against the Chargers and the Colts. During that period, the Steelers started Jalen Ramsey and Kyle Dugger at free and strong safety, with Chuck Clark being the only other safety to see action on defense.
Thornhill joined Pittsburgh in the offseason on a one-year, $3 million contract. He was brought in to start at free safety after the team traded Minkah Fitzpatrick. Appearing in all nine games with one official start this season, he recorded 38 total tackles and one pass defensed.
The veteran safety previously played for the Kansas City Chiefs and Cleveland Browns.
