The White House is expected to announce new vehicle fuel economy standards on Wednesday, a move that will roll back more stringent regulations set by the previous administration.
According to administration sources, the proposal will reverse a Biden-era rule that required passenger cars and light trucks to achieve a fleet-wide average of approximately 50 miles per gallon by 2031. President Donald Trump is scheduled to make the official announcement at 2:30 p.m. ET from the Oval Office.
Executives from Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis are expected to be in attendance.
The Biden administration’s standards were designed to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in the United States. The new policy aligns with the Trump administration’s broader effort to scale back federal support for EVs.
The American Petroleum Institute, an oil industry trade group, has actively lobbied for the repeal, arguing that the previous standards effectively aimed to phase out gasoline-powered vehicles. This policy shift also drew praise from some automakers.
In a statement, Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa said the automaker “appreciates the Trump Administration’s actions to re-align the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards with real world market conditions.”
The CAFE standards were first enacted in 1975 and have been progressively tightened over the decades to improve vehicle efficiency.
