A federal prosecutor appointed by former President Donald Trump presented evidence to a grand jury on Thursday, seeking to indict New York Attorney General Letitia James on mortgage fraud charges, according to sources familiar with the matter.
It was not immediately known whether the grand jury approved the indictment sought by Lindsey Halligan, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. A spokesperson for James’s legal team declined to comment.
Halligan was appointed by Trump after he ousted her predecessor, Erik Siebert, who sources said had expressed internal doubts about bringing cases against James and former FBI Director James Comey.
Last month, Halligan secured an indictment against Comey on charges of making a false statement and obstruction related to his 2020 Senate testimony. That action came just days after Trump publicly demanded that his Justice Department prosecute Comey and other political rivals.
In a social media post, Trump addressed Attorney General Pam Bondi, writing, “What about Comey, Adam ‘Shifty’ Schiff, and Leticia??? We can’t delay any longer… JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW!!!”
Comey pleaded not guilty on Wednesday and is expected to seek a dismissal of his case on grounds of vindictive prosecution.
