The House of Representatives will not hold votes next week, even as the government shutdown continues. House leadership announced Friday that members will have a “district work period” from Tuesday, October 7, through Monday, October 13.
The decision to cancel the legislative session delays a potential floor vote on the release of the full Jeffrey Epstein files. The vote is contingent on the swearing-in of Representative-elect Adelita Grijalva, who won a special election in Arizona on September 23 but has not yet been sworn in by Speaker Mike Johnson.
Once seated, Grijalva has pledged to sign a discharge petition to release the files. Her signature would be the 218th, providing the majority needed to compel a floor vote on the matter.
Speaker Johnson has opposed the bipartisan effort, which is led by Representatives Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.).
