Billy Carlson, the top-ranked player in the University of Tennessee’s baseball recruiting class, was selected by the Chicago White Sox with the 10th overall pick in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft on July 13.
His selection made him the second consecutive Tennessee signee to be drafted, following Alabama shortstop Steele Hall, who was chosen ninth overall by the Cincinnati Reds.
A standout from Corona High School in California, Carlson is highly regarded as a top national talent. He is ranked by Perfect Game as the No. 3 prospect in the country and the No. 2 shortstop, with many considering him the best defensive high school shortstop nationwide. MLB.com also ranked him as the No. 7 overall prospect available in the draft.
Carlson had previously committed to Vanderbilt but switched his commitment to Tennessee in October after a coaching staff shakeup at the Nashville-based university. The dismissal of two assistants, including hitting coach Mike Baxter, prompted Carlson to re-evaluate his options, ultimately leading him to sign with the Volunteers. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound infielder took an official visit to Tennessee in mid-October.
