Hamas has recalled approximately 7,000 members of its security forces to reassert control over areas in Gaza recently vacated by Israeli troops. Local sources report that to oversee these operations, the group has appointed five new governors, all with military backgrounds, including some who previously commanded brigades in its armed wing.
A mobilisation order was reportedly issued via phone calls and text messages, stating: “We declare a general mobilisation in response to the call of national and religious duty, to cleanse Gaza of outlaws and collaborators with Israel. You must report within 24 hours to your designated locations.” Following the directive, armed Hamas units have been seen deploying across several districts, some in civilian clothes and others in the blue uniforms of the Gaza police.
The move comes amid widespread uncertainty over who will govern Gaza after the war, a critical issue that could complicate international post-conflict plans, which often call for the group’s disarmament.
When asked about the deployment, a Hamas official abroad told the BBC, “We cannot leave Gaza at the mercy of thieves and militias backed by the Israeli occupation. Our weapons are legitimate, they exist to resist occupation and they will remain as long as the occupation continues.”
However, the development has sparked fears of renewed internal bloodshed. A retired Palestinian Authority security officer who served for years in Gaza expressed concern, stating, “Hamas hasn’t changed. It still believes that weapons and violence are the only means to keep its movement alive.” For Gazans already worn down by the devastating conflict, these events have become a source of deep anxiety.
