Former Egyptian football star Reda Abdel-Aal has lauded the performance of Al Ahly’s new Danish manager, Jess Thorup, following the team’s commanding 4-1 victory over Algerian side JS Kabylie. The win came at the Cairo International Stadium in the opening match of the CAF Champions League group stage.
Speaking on the “Al Primo” program, Abdel-Aal described Thorup’s start with the Cairo giants as “very promising,” stating that the new manager’s approach reflects a clear vision for reorganizing the squad. He noted that Thorup successfully implemented his tactical philosophy from his debut match, particularly by restoring confidence in Malian midfielder Aliou Dieng. According to Abdel-Aal, Dieng had been sidelined under the previous coach, José Riveiro, but has been revitalized in a key defensive midfield role.
Abdel-Aal believes the pairing of Marwan Attia and Aliou Dieng now forms the optimal defensive midfield pivot for Al Ahly. He highlighted how this setup allows Emam Ashour to operate more freely in an advanced attacking midfield position, creating a more balanced and cohesive team structure. This tactical arrangement, he explained, grants Al Ahly superior control of the midfield and enhances the effectiveness of their offensive transitions and counter-attacks.
The former star also commented on squad selection, suggesting that Tunisian international Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane may find it difficult to secure a starting position. Abdel-Aal asserted that Thorup bases his decisions on current form and technical merit rather than a player’s reputation or transfer fee. He argued that Ben Romdhane has yet to display the level required to be a regular starter.
Looking ahead, Abdel-Aal emphasized the need for consistency, stating that Thorup’s clear strategy for reshaping the team’s playstyle and personnel aligns with Al Ahly’s ambitions for domestic and continental glory.
