Culinary experts know the importance of salt in food recipes, especially as it is an element that, if more than required or a little less, may spoil delicious dishes, but what many do not know is that salt has other amazing benefits far from cooking, whether in the kitchen or in other purposes that may not occur. Mind you, here are the most important ones:
Reduce the bitter taste of coffee
Many people prefer to drink unsweetened (American or Turkish) coffee. If you are one of those people, add a “pinch of salt” to the cup, as salt contains sodium ions that neutralize or cancel out the bitter taste of coffee. Experts also recommend adding about 1/8 teaspoon of salt to the ground coffee beans before turning on the coffee maker.
bee sting treatment
If a bee stings you, salt is a natural salve. Immediately wet the sting and cover it with salt to reduce pain and reduce swelling.
Fridge cleaning
You should clean your refrigerator every 3 to 6 months to keep it looking and smelling, and to remove food stains and odors, scrub the shelves with ½ cup of salt mixed with two liters of warm water.
chopping board disinfection
Plastic and wood cutting boards harbor germs deep within the streaks made by the knife. You can banish bacteria by rubbing the board with salt.
For plastic cutting boards that you use to handle meat, sprinkle the cleaning liquid and salt on the board, scrub with a bristle brush, and rinse with hot water.
To increase sterilization, rub the wooden board with salt and lemon, then wash and dry it well.
Cleaning the shower sponge
Hand sponges and mops usually rot long before they are actually worn out. To restore the sponge to its original state, soak it overnight in a solution containing about 1/4 cup salt per liter of water.
Remove bad odors from shoes
Sneakers and other canvas shoes can get smelly, especially if you wear them without socks in the summer. Get rid of that smell by absorbing the moisture by sprinkling a little salt in your canvas shoes.
Remove flower deposits from vases
The flowers wilt in the vase, leaving sediment on their sides. To get rid of them, clean these sediments with salt, then wash them with soap and water.
Extinguishing fat fires
During cooking, utensils may catch fire due to ignition of oil or fat, and water may cause flames to spread. Instead, throw salt or baking soda on the fire, and an extra tip is to quickly cover it with a metal lid to prevent oxygen from reaching the fire.
To get rid of bad breath
Use a natural alternative to mouthwash. Dissolve one teaspoon of table salt with one teaspoon of baking soda in half a cup of water, then use the mixture as a mouth rinse. The salt acts as a disinfectant to kill the bacteria that cause bad breath.
Extending the shelf life of milk
When the milk approaches the expiration date, you can keep it fresh for a few more days by adding a pinch of salt in the package and shaking it gently.
Rotten egg test
To test the viability of eggs, place an egg in a bowl of salt water. If it sank, be fresh. If it floats, it is corrupt.
Beverage cooling
To quickly cool bottles of water, juice, and soda, put the bottles in a bucket of ice water and mix with a handful of salt. You will be amazed at how quickly the drinks will cool down and keep their fresh temperature for long hours.
fresh fruit
Keep sliced fruit fresh without wilting, oxidizing and turning brown by dipping them in -1/8 teaspoon salt and 1 cup water—for a few minutes. Do not forget to wash the fruit quickly in fresh water so that its taste is not affected by the salt.
sore throat
To get rid of a sore throat, mix some table salt in a cup of warm water. Use the mixture for 30 seconds to relieve the pain. Salt can expel mucus and other irritants that cause a sore throat.
Face and hand mask
A home face mask requires only two basic ingredients; Salt and olive oil. Make a paste using ¼ cup of salt and ½ cup of olive oil, and gently apply it to your skin in a circular motion.
Leave the mask on the face and hands for 5 minutes before washing it off. Moisturizing olive oil and exfoliating salt will leave your face, hands, and even lips moisturized for long periods of time.
Making undipped candles
To prevent dripping from melted candles, use a salt water trick as an outer candle shell.
Soak candles in a solution of salt water (2 cups water and 2 tablespoons salt) for 24 hours, then dry them well. When you use candles later, you won’t find the usual mess of wax drips.
hair dandruff treatment
Sprinkle a little salt on your scalp and massage your head for 5 minutes, then rinse and shampoo as usual. The salt will scrub away the dry skin on your scalp, and your hair will be clean after shampooing.
strengthening nails
Mix 1 teaspoon each of salt, baking soda, and lemon juice in half a cup of hot water. Soak your fingertips in the mixture for 10 minutes, then rinse well.
This mixture helps strengthen and smooth nails, and your nails will look healthier and shinier.
clogged drain
Repairing a clogged drain does not necessarily require a plumber. So try this alternative. Mix 1 cup of salt with 1 cup of baking soda and ½ cup of white vinegar, then pour the mixture down the drain.
Leave it for 10 minutes before pouring about two liters of boiling water down the drain. Turn on the hot water faucet and let it flow for a few seconds, and you will be amazed at the result.
