The Lebanese Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday that at least 20 people were killed in an Israeli raid that targeted a building in the coastal town of Barja, located more than 20 kilometers south of Beirut.
The ministry stated in a statement that “the non-final toll of the Israeli enemy’s raid on a tower in the Chouf district of Mount Lebanon Governorate rose to 20 martyrs and 14 wounded.” She added that rescue operations and removal of rubble are still continuing.
The Ministry had previously announced that the raid on Burja resulted in the death of 15 people and the injury of others, before announcing that the death toll had risen.
Smoke continued to rise from the building on Tuesday evening, according to eyewitnesses, while many families fled the site.
This is the second Israeli strike on Tuesday targeting an area outside strongholds Hezbollah Conventional weapons that Israel has been targeting since the start of its comprehensive attack on southern Lebanon.
Earlier, a raid targeted another residential building in the town of Jiyeh, near Barja, killing one person, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.
Since September 23, Israel has expanded the scope of the war on Lebanon to include most regions, including the capital, Beirut, through air strikes. It also began a ground invasion in its south, while negotiations have not resulted in a ceasefire yet.
The Israeli escalation led to the death and injury of thousands of Lebanese, in addition to forcing more than a million people to flee their homes.
