The informal economy has different modalities, in the labor market there are four main types of informal work:

- Workers who are self-employed informally
- Informal workers in the agricultural sector
- Other types of informal workers
In most cases, informal sector workers have limited labor rights, such as access to social security, contracts, health institutions, or housing loans.
In Mexico, informal work in all its modalities represents 55.4% of all jobs, according to figures from the ENOE (National Survey of Occupation and Employment) of the Inegi.
In absolute terms, there are 32.4 million Mexicans who work in these conditions, while formal jobs amount to 26.1 million.
