49ers Part Ways with Kicker Jake Moody

The San Francisco 49ers are waiving kicker Jake Moody, a significant reversal from head coach Kyle Shanahan’s initial support for him after a difficult Week 1 performance.

The move follows the 49ers’ 17-13 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, a game in which the 2023 third-round draft pick missed one field goal and had another attempt blocked. While Shanahan initially stood by his kicker, his post-game comments in hindsight suggested his commitment was not absolute.

“Right now, I have no question,” Shanahan had said. “Ask me every day and I’ll answer how I am right at that moment.”

In an era defined by powerful and accurate long-range kickers, inconsistency on shorter attempts has become increasingly scrutinized. Moody’s struggles ultimately led to the team’s decision to move on.

During his career with San Francisco, Moody missed 16 of his 62 field goal attempts. He will now be placed on waivers and will become a free agent if he is not claimed by another team.
