(Trends Wide) — The Mexican Consulate in San Diego said at least 7 of the 8 migrants killed Saturday when their boat capsized near Black’s Beach in La Jolla, in San Diego County, California, came from Mexico.
“Based on the identifications that some carried, it is presumed that seven of these people are nationals of Mexico, coming from states in the interior of the Republic,” the Consulate said in a press release. The nationality of the eighth victim is unknown.
Rescuers rushed to the scene Saturday around 11:30 p.m. local time after someone in another panga boat, a type of small fishing boat powered by an outboard motor, called 911 to report casualties on the water, according to the San Diego Fire and Rescue Department.
