(Trends Wide) — A nine-year-old boy who was seriously injured at the Astroworld Festival on Friday night is in a medically induced coma in an attempt to overcome the trauma to his brain, according to the boy’s grandfather.
Bernon Blount told Trends Wide that his grandson, Ezra Blount, was in town to see “his favorite artist” and attended the concert with his father, Treston Blount.
“When my son went to the concert, he had my grandson on his shoulders,” said Blount. “All the people pushed and he couldn’t breathe, so he ended up passing out from all the pressure that was being applied to his body. And when he passed out, Ezra fell off his shoulders and into the crowd.
When Bernon’s son came to, his grandson Ezra had already been taken to the hospital as an unknown. “They didn’t know anything about him, his name or anything because he separated from my son,” Bernon said.
When the father regained consciousness, “instead of being seen or checked, he went and tried to find Ezra and ended up finding him at the Texas Children’s Hospital,” according to Blount.
“During the event at the concert, he had a cardiac arrest that damaged his heart,” he said. “He has damage to his liver, his lungs … and on top of that, he has inflammation in his brain,” Blount said. Trends Wide has not been able to independently confirm Ezra’s medical status with the hospital.
The family is “devastated that it was supposed to be a father and son outing for them to come together and it has turned into something horrible and tragic,” Blount said.
“There must be accountability, not just from the artist or event planners, but from the city of Houston as well,” Blount added.
Attorneys Ben Crump of Ben Crump Law and Alex and Bob Hilliard of Hilliard Martinez Gonzalez have been hired by Ezra Blount’s parents, according to a statement from the attorneys.
“The suffering this family is going through is immeasurable. This child had his whole life ahead of him, a life that is currently at stake due to the reckless mismanagement that occurred at the Astroworld Festival,” said attorney Crump at the release.
The family has opened a GoFundMe page to seek support for Ezra’s recovery.
