90% of Mexican workers believe that the minimum wage is not enough for a dignified life: CSI

Globally, the vast majority of people believe that the minimum salary it’s not enough to carry one dignified lifeas revealed by the 2022 World Survey of the International Trade Union Confederation (CSI) headed by Secretary General Sharan Burrow.

In the 17 countries included in this survey, almost three quarters (72%) of people believe that the minimum wage is not enough to live decently. At least half – and up to nine out of 10 – of the people in each country believe that it is not enough to lead a dignified life in Bulgaria (91%), Mexico (90%), Argentina (88%) and Brazil (84%). %) believe that the minimum wage in their country is not enough to lead a dignified life.

The ITUC Global Survey 2022 covers 17 countries on various continents, representing 2.2 billion people aged 18 and over. The results have been analyzed on a global scale and represent the average of the 17 countries, as well as by individual country and by regional grouping (Africa, Asia, Americas, Europe and the G20).

In this sense, he highlights that “wages do not keep up with the cost of living, there is a global employment crisis and a deep-rooted pessimism that doubts that the next generation will find work. In one of every two households some job and working hours have been lost”.

Towards a new social contract

As part of the conclusions of the Survey, the general secretary of the ITUC, said that it is necessary to move towards a new social contract, “in all the countries that participated in the ITUC Survey there is overwhelming public support in favor of a new social contract based on six workers’ demands: employment, rights, wages, social protection, equality and inclusion”.

For example, in the case of salary, 68% of people want their government to work to get a salary increase for workers and workers and 72% affirm that the Government is responsible for guaranteeing that citizenship has a reasonable cost of living.

In the case of social protection; the survey reveals that social protection 87% of people are in favor of their government providing affordable access to healthcare; 86% of people are in favor of their government providing a decent pension and 83% that there be aid for maternity leave; while 78% of them consider that the Government should provide unemployment benefits.
