Jose Mourinho took a dig at former club Real Madrid over the LaLiga club’s treatment of Gareth Bale after the Welsh winger scored his first goal since returning to Tottenham.
Bale netted the winner in Spurs’ 2-1 win over Brighton on Sunday evening to lift the north Londoners up to second place in the Premier League table.
The 31-year-old had a frosty end to his career at Real Madrid after being exiled by Zinedine Zidane – with the Spanish club bidding farewell to the Welshman with just a 44-word exit statement in September.

And after the Brighton win, Mourinho said: ‘I’m very pleased for him, especially for him because he deserves that. When I have five minutes I’m going to Safari to look at Madrid websites to see what they say.
‘He knows we care about him and we know he cares about us, the team and the club, Spurs. He’s the perfect fit, he’s very calm, very intelligent, he has good feelings.’
Bale spent seven years at Real Madrid, where he won two LaLiga titles, four Champions League trophies and three Club World Cup wins, but had a difficult relationship with the LaLiga club’s hierarchy and supporters towards the end of his tenure.

The Wales international winger was brought in and out of Zidane’s squad and angered Madrid supporters when he stood next to a ‘Wales. Golf. Madrid: In That Order’ banner in celebration while on international duty last year.
After being shut out by Zidane for Madrid’s preparations in the 2020-21 season, Bale secured a loan move back to Spurs for the current campaign where he played before his £90million switch to Spain.
Upon announcing Bale’s departure, a statement from the Madrid club read: ‘Real Madrid C. F. and Tottenham Hotspur FC have agreed to the loan of Gareth Bale for next season, until 30 June, 2021.

‘Our club wishes the best of luck to a player who is part of one of the most successful periods of our history.’
After scoring the winning goal against Brighton on Sunday, Mourinho claims Bale is not yet ready fitness-wise to start a Premier League fixture at the moment but that status could change soon.
Mourinho added: ‘He had bad feelings before, because the training process was hard, and his body was suffering a little bit, but we gave him what he needs as a whole.
‘I am speaking about sports science, medical, my assistants, the other players. I’m very pleased for him to score this winning goal.

‘I told already for about a week or so, I’m saying he’s improving. It’s not just by watching him, the data supports our training process. We knew. The good thing is Gareth also knows. We share ideas and share feelings.
‘He doesn’t have 90 minutes of a Premier League match in his legs yet so we’re using the Europa League to complement his training process.
‘We are using some matches in the Premier League when we decide to play him and the normal tendency for him will be of course to be better and better and better.
‘I always will have this care with him until we feel that he’s ready.’
