Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia announced Friday night that she is resigning from the House of Representatives, effective January 5.
Greene’s decision, shared in a video and a statement on X, follows a public falling out with President Donald Trump. The rift reportedly emerged after Trump criticized Greene for supporting a bill to compel the Department of Justice to release its investigative files on the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Greene had also faulted the president for prioritizing meetings with foreign leaders over the needs of Americans.
In her statement, Greene explained she wished to avoid a divisive primary fight against a candidate backed by the president. “I have too much self respect and dignity, love my family too much, and do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the President we all fought for,” she wrote.
She added that after such a battle, she would still be expected “to defend the President against impeachment after he hatefully dumped tens of millions of dollars against me and tried to destroy me.”
“It’s all so absurd and completely unserious,” Greene concluded. “I refuse to be a ‘battered wife’ hoping it all goes away and gets better.”
