Virginia State Police are conducting an active search in Wise County for Union High School’s head football coach, Travis Turner, who has been officially listed as a missing person.
According to the state’s missing persons database, Turner, 46, was last seen on Thursday wearing a gray sweatshirt, gray sweatpants, and glasses. The multi-day search effort is centered in the Appalachia region of the county.
The events began Thursday evening when Virginia State Police agents were sent to Turner’s residence as part of an investigation. Authorities specified that the purpose of the visit was not to make an arrest, but they learned upon arrival that Turner was no longer at the location.
In a related development, Wise County Schools confirmed Friday that a staff member had been placed on paid administrative leave while an “external agency reviews an allegation.” Officials described the action as standard procedure and not a determination of wrongdoing, but declined to identify the employee involved.
Both the search and the investigation remain ongoing.
