A major fire has engulfed three towers at a residential estate in Hong Kong, resulting in at least four deaths and several injuries.
The blaze erupted on Wednesday at Wang Fuk Court, an eight-block complex with 2,000 units in the city’s northern Tai Po district. Dramatic images from the scene show the high-rise buildings shrouded in thick smoke and flames.
The Hong Kong government has confirmed that seven people were taken to hospitals. Four have since died, two remain in critical condition, and one is stable. According to Reuters, some of the injured include firefighters who were battling the blaze.
Emergency services were first alerted to the fire at 2:51 p.m. local time. The incident was escalated to a level 4 alarm less than an hour later as the fire intensified. In response, authorities have closed a section of the Tai Po highway and diverted local bus routes.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. It remains unclear how many people may still be trapped inside the buildings or when the blaze will be fully extinguished.
