Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta is expected to miss the remainder of the season after undergoing back surgery.
Head coach Dan Campbell confirmed the news on Friday, stating that while the procedure went well for LaPorta’s long-term health, his return this year is unlikely. “I think we would be fortunate to have a chance to get him back for the rest of the season,” Campbell said. “I think that’s very, very slim.”
LaPorta sustained the injury during the Lions’ victory over the Washington Commanders on November 9. After being placed on injured reserve, he missed the subsequent loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on November 16.
His absence is a significant blow to the Detroit offense. LaPorta is second on the team with 40 catches for 489 yards and three touchdowns, serving as a key threat on third downs and in the red zone. A second-round pick in 2023, he set a rookie record with 86 receptions last season and is considered a core player eligible for a contract extension this offseason.
The team’s depth at tight end is further depleted as Brock Wright, who started in place of LaPorta against Philadelphia, will also miss Thursday’s game against the Green Bay Packers with a neck injury. With both players sidelined, the Lions have elevated Anthony Firkser from the practice squad to join veteran Ross Dwelley on the active roster.
