The Harry & Meghan Foundation, a non-profit “Archwell Foundation”, will join with celebrity chef Jose Andres to build a chain of community relief centers.
These centers will be permanent facilities that can be opened quickly to function as kitchens during emergencies such as natural disasters, and they may also serve as food distribution centers, schools or clinics.
“The health of our societies depends on our ability to communicate with our common humanity,” Harry and his wife, Megan Markle, said in a press release on Sunday.
“When we think of Chef Andres and his amazing team at the World Central Kitchen, we remember that even in a year of unimaginable difficulties, there are so many wonderful people who are willing to work tirelessly to support one another.”
The first of the four centers will open in 2021 on the Caribbean island of Dominica, which was swept by Hurricanes Maria and Irma in 2017, and the second place will be located in Puerto Rico, which was also hit hard by the two hurricanes.
The charity will also seek support from other organizations to construct more such centers around the world.
Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, gave up their roles as active members of the royal family at the end of March, moving to California and away from the limelight.
