U.S. ambassadors operate by choice of the president and need Senate approval before they take office.
Since taking office, Donald Trump has made some 189 ambassador appointments, including diplomats from the State Department.
Commenting on this, Anthony Gardner, the US ambassador under Barack Obama to the European Union, said that President-elect Joe Biden should expel all President Trump’s ambassadors on January 20, 2021, as a mutual response to Trump’s dismissal of all President Barack Obama’s diplomats on the first day of 2017.
Gardner added, through his account on “Twitter”: “Exactly 4 years ago, I received a telegram from the next Trump team to leave on January 20, and it is time for a similar telegram to come out now: all ambassadors appointed by Trump must leave on January 20.”
Exactly 4 years ago i received telegram from incoming Trump team to vacate on Jan 20. Time for similar telegram to go out now: all Trump politically appointed ambassadors to leave Jan 20. Sondland already disgraced and went home. Time to send qualified people to important posts.

He noted that Gordon Sondland, who served as the US ambassador to the European Union between 2018 and 2020, was “stigmatized” and brought home, adding that it was time to send qualified people to important positions.
