The United Nations held its closing session for 2020 to vote on the draft budget resolution for 2021, in which both the United States and Israel voted against the $ 3.231 billion budget resolution.
The US permanent representative, Kelly Craft, said that her country’s vote against the budget “will not change Washington’s contributions to the United Nations programs, including 25 percent of peacekeeping expenditures, and about $ 9 billion annually in support of humanitarian relief.”
She explained that “the United States, which is the largest funder of the United Nations, wanted with this vote to clarify its adherence to its principles and its defense of righteousness, and we never accept unanimous voting solely for the sake of consensus,” indicating that Washington “objected to the budget decision because of allocating part of it to finance a special meeting on the occasion of the anniversary.” The 20th World Conference Against Racism, Held in Durban, South Africa, 2001. “
In turn, Israel’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Gilad Erdan, described Washington’s vote against the UN budget as a “rare step.”
Gilad said in a message distributed to journalists at the UN headquarters, “Washington’s vote came in response to the UN’s continuing bias against Israel and its intention to allocate funds for an event celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Durban Conference to Combat Racism.”
“We all know that this money will not be used to support human rights but to spread more anti-Semitism and hatred towards Israel,” he added.
