Sudan announces its “firm rejection” of phasing the division of the Renaissance Dam agreement

The Sudanese negotiating team on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam announced its firm refusal to split the agreement into stages, for the first filling and permanent operation as two separate agreements.

During a bilateral meeting with the African Union experts’ team, the negotiation team called for reaching a single comprehensive agreement that would address all issues related to the Renaissance Dam.

This meeting, which was held on Saturday, comes in response to Sudan’s call to give the African Union experts a greater role in facilitating negotiations between Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia, with the aim of contributing to the preparation of a second draft of the proposed memorandum of agreement, which the three countries received at the previous six-party meeting at the beginning of this month, taking into account. The meeting discussed the need to establish a clear frame of reference for the role of the AU experts, and Sudan stressed the need for the AU to play a leading and proactive role in the negotiations, more effective than its role during previous negotiation rounds.

The meeting also reviewed Sudan’s views on the necessity of the binding agreement, which is being negotiated, and its inclusion in clear mechanisms for resolving potential conflicts.
