Production company 21 Laps, the creative force behind the successful Night at the Museum franchise, is developing a reimagining of the property for 20th Century Studios. Screenwriter Tripper Clancy has been hired to pen the script.
While plot details remain confidential, the new film is expected to introduce an original story with an all-new cast of characters. Shawn Levy and Dan Levine will produce for 21 Laps, with Emily Morris overseeing the project for the company.
The original Night at the Museum series, based on Milan Trenc’s 1993 children’s book, became a global phenomenon for 20th Century Fox. The trilogy, directed by Levy and starring Ben Stiller, included Night at the Museum (2006), Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009), and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014), which collectively earned over $1.35 billion at the worldwide box office. Following Disney’s acquisition of Fox, the franchise was expanded with the animated Disney+ feature Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again in 2022.
Clancy, a WGA Award-winning writer, is known for scripting the Die Hart franchise starring Kevin Hart and the buddy action-comedy Stuber. He is a frequent collaborator with 21 Laps, having served as a co-executive producer on the Netflix series I Am Not Okay With This and developed a hybrid series based on the children’s book Bolivar.
21 Laps continues its successful run following the record-breaking release of Deadpool & Wolverine. The company’s upcoming slate includes the highly anticipated final season of Netflix’s Stranger Things and several new feature adaptations, reaffirming its robust partnership with the streamer.
