Russia is in the process of establishing floating airports in the Arctic Ocean

The Russian “Nevsky” Design Office has begun work on a project for a floating airport that will serve various types of Russian civil and military aviation.

This came in a report issued by the office on the occasion of the celebration of the 90th anniversary of its founding. The report said the office had developed basic exterior profiles of the floating airport and floating island.

The report recalled that the floating airports may be used to secure the operation of transport and rescue aircraft and warplanes in the Arctic region, as well as for the purpose of exploring natural resources in the northern seas, ensuring free navigation in the northern maritime route, and assisting the Russian Defense Ministry in performing the functions of its peers in the region.

The report indicated that the floating airports included the use of the runway for take off and landing of aircraft in all weather conditions and the vertical and longitudinal ripple of the platform.

It is noteworthy that the Nevsky Design Office is a Russian technical design agency that has previously undertaken the design of various types of ships, aircraft carriers and personnel training equipment to pilot them. The office has designed more than 300 civilian and military ships, including large ships for China and India.
