Almost 300,000 residents are put on high alert after coronavirus is detected in sewage water in Queensland despite the state going 12 days since its last locally-transmitted Covid-19 case
Coronavirus particles have been detected at three wastewater treatment plants across Queensland, putting 300,000 on high alert.
Routine testing returned a positive result for virtual fragments in Townsville, Nambour and Rockhampton.
Residents living in those areas have been warned to be ‘alert but not alarmed’.
‘A positive sewage result means that someone who has been infected or is currently infected, is shedding the virus,’ Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said
‘Infected people can shed viral fragments and that shedding can happen for several weeks to months after the person is no longer infectious.
‘This does not necessarily mean we have new cases of COVID-19 in these communities, but I will once again stress the need to be vigilant with any COVID-19 symptoms.’
