Rouhani intends to sue Iranian state television after being accused of drug use

The legal affairs office of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani announced that it intends to sue state television for “defamation”, after a cleric accused Rouhani of drug use in a live interview.

The cleric, Ahmed Jahan Bazorgi, a member of the faculty at the Institute of Culture and Islamic Thought, claimed that President Rouhani is not interested in the country’s problems and said: “The official may sit in his house by the stove, ignoring what is happening in his country and not communicating with the ministers.”

The term “sitting by the stove” is used in Iran for drug users.

The office of the Iranian president demanded the Radio and Television Corporation to provide an explanation, accusing the foundation of insulting Rouhani, an institution whose president is appointed and removed by the Supreme Leader of the Iranian Revolution, Ali Khamenei.

State television did not offer an apology, but it said in an official statement that “the statements of the cleric, Ahmed Jahan Bazghi, are unprofessional and unfair,” considering them “inconsistent with his goals,” and he said, “Guests and experts are responsible for their statements in the programs broadcast on the air. directly”.
