Biden nominates former ambassador to Russia for the position of director of the CIA

The White House announced that President Joe Biden has formally nominated former diplomat William Burns for the position of Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Biden’s intention was announced to name Burns the new director of the Central Intelligence Agency on January 11th.

After the formal nomination, the Senate Competent Committee is set to set a date for the hearing, in which the candidate for the position will respond to lawmakers’ questions. Later, the council will vote on his appointment.

It is worth noting that William Burns is a veteran diplomat who worked in the US State Department for 33 years and is specialized in Russia and the Middle East.

Burns was US Deputy Secretary of State from 2011 to 2014.

Prior to that, he was ambassador to Russia in 2005-2008, assistant to the foreign minister for Middle East affairs in 2001-2005, and ambassador to Jordan from 1998 to 2001.

Since leaving diplomatic service in 2014, he has chaired the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
