The grandson of the late Italian Fascist dictator, Benito Mussolini, called on Lazio fans not to judge him by his family, after joining the youth team of the club in the Italian football league.
Romano Floriani Mussolini, 18, joined the Under-23 squad at Lazio in the last two matches, including a 0-2 defeat by Juventus on Saturday.
“I hope that my presence in Lazio will be judged by the way I play and not because I bear the name of Mussolini,” Romano told the Italian newspaper, Il Messaggero.
The promising defender is currently completing his final year at St. George’s British International School in Rome, near the Lazio Training Center.
It was not immediately clear if Romano signed a professional contract with Lazio.
Romano is the third son of Alessandra Mussolini and her husband, Mauro Floriani, and the grandson of Benito Mussolini, who was Italian Prime Minister between 1922 and 1943 after a fascist coup.
