Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Facebook announced the launch of the “Instagram Light” service, which aims to provide people living in rural and remote communities with a high-quality experience on its social media platform, “Instagram”, using a minimum of Cellular data.
“Facebook” said in a statement on Wednesday that it will launch the service in the form of an application that works on “Android” phones and is available in 170 countries around the world facing poor Internet connection, to facilitate the experience of communication and sharing of pictures on the platform in areas facing Internet connection problems.
“Facebook” said in its statement that over the past year, “Instagram has become a lifeline for many to communicate with their loved ones … But for millions of people around the world, accessing these daily doses of communication and entertainment is not that simple.”
Tzak Hadar, Director of Product Management at Facebook in Tel Aviv where the app was developed, explains that the company is developing these light versions “for people with low connectivity or limited data subscriptions, because our main premise is to leave no one behind. We wanted it to remain an experiment.” Instagram is fast, high quality and reliable, regardless of the device, platform and network people are using. ”
The application requires only 2 megabytes to download on Android operating systems, which is much less than the full-size version of the app, which has a capacity of about 30 MB. Despite the much smaller capacity, the Light app retains the main features that people who use basic devices need.
It is noteworthy that the “Facebook” company had also launched a lighter version of its similar application, called “Facebook Light”, about 5 years ago.
