Turkey announced its rejection of the accusations leveled by the European Parliament of violations committed in Syria, describing it as far from reality and irresponsible.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry confirmed that it “rejects the allegations made by the European Parliament to Turkey, which embraces millions of Syrians on its soil, and bears great responsibilities alone due to the crisis in this country.”
It indicated that “Turkey has carried out military operations in northern Syria under the right to self-defense stipulated in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, with the aim of combating terrorist organizations that pose a threat to the Turkish and Syrian peoples.”
She added, “The Turkish army made great efforts in order not to harm civilians during those operations, through which it succeeded in ridding the Syrian people of ISIS, the Kurdish Protection Units and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party.”
She added, “The operations have resulted in the voluntary return of more than 420,000 Syrian refugees, with the supervision of local forces affiliated with the interim government in maintaining stability and security in the region.”
She explained, “Turkey continues with great determination to confront all forms of terrorist organizations on the ground on the one hand, and seeks on the table to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis under UN Resolution 2254, on the other hand.”
And she continued, “We call on the European Parliament to realize the extent of the importance of Turkish contributions in Syria in terms of protecting the borders of NATO and Europe, and to seek to contribute to reaching a political settlement of the problem, instead of making irresponsible accusations far from reality.”
The European Parliament adopted a draft resolution accusing Turkey of committing violations in Syria, and calling on it to withdraw its soldiers from the north of this country, after it “occupied northern Syria” and “endangered peace in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean.”
