The WNBA has officially announced its return to Portland, reviving the city’s original team name for its new franchise: the Portland Fire. The name and a new logo, which features a rose engulfed in flames, were unveiled Tuesday morning during a live broadcast of ABC’s “Good Morning America” from The Sports Bra in northeast Portland.
The revival of the “Fire” name had been widely anticipated following several trademark applications filed by the league in recent weeks. The original Portland Fire competed in the WNBA from 2000 to 2002, playing at the venue now known as the Moda Center.
The Portland franchise is the league’s 15th team and the third in the WNBA’s latest round of expansion, following the Golden State Valkyries and the Toronto Tempo. Players for the new team will be selected during an expansion draft scheduled for early December.
To commemorate the news, the franchise will host a public launch party at the Moda Center on Tuesday afternoon.
