In a statement, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said, “The United States grants an additional $ 52 million in aid to deal with the humanitarian crisis in the Ethiopian Tigray region,” adding that the total volume of American aid in this area has reached $ 153 million so far.
Blinken explained that these funds will be allocated to support the efforts of international humanitarian organizations in helping some of the 4.5 million local people who are in dire need of aid, in addition to about 62 thousand refugees who fled to Sudan.
Blinken also stressed, however, the need to end hostilities and hold accountable those who committed human rights violations in Tigray.
The US Secretary of State called for the immediate withdrawal of Eritrean forces and urged the Ethiopian government to stop the deployment of forces in the region and to allow humanitarian aid to arrive there.
Earlier Thursday, the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, announced that it had agreed to an Ethiopian request for a joint investigation into possible war crimes in the Tigray region in northern Ethiopia.
The fighting between the federal forces of the government of the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, the ruling party in the aforementioned region, resulted in the deaths of thousands of people.
