The spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, confirmed that the Canadian government, by imposing sanctions against Moscow, had reduced bilateral relations with Russia to the lowest level in its history.
She said, “Ottawa’s decision to impose anti-Russian sanctions based on its anti-Moscow instincts, and for a weak reason represented in the case of” the persecution of Alexei Navalny and the opposition in Russia, “is not surprising and reflects Washington’s desires.
She added, “Such self-isolation from Russia, which sincerely respects the Canadian people, contradicts Canadian national interests, and deprives Canada’s foreign policy of its independence and focus on multilateral diplomacy rooted in the interaction of previous generations of politicians.”
Zakharova stressed that “the response to the sanctions will be harsh and will take place in the near future.”
On Wednesday, Canada imposed sanctions on 9 Russian officials over the “deteriorating human rights situation”, in a list of sanctions similar to those imposed by the United States against Russia.
