The former head of the Egyptian Maritime Safety Authority, Major General Hussein Al-Hermel, stressed the importance of the speedy recovery of the black box of the delinquent ship and its emptying by a specialized technical committee in which the sovereign bodies participate.
He said, “The necessity of pushing two divers under the ship to inspect the hull of the ship below the bottom, in addition to analyzing all conversations between the ship’s captain and auxiliaries before entering the canal and even stranding, and also analyzing the ship’s reputation.”
He added: “The compensation committee formed by the state in the presence of the insurance company must include all the items, starting with the suspension of navigation traffic, the cost of the float, and the international reputation that caused damage to the canal.”
He continued, “The International Maritime Organization is following the steps taken by Egypt in this crisis, and it will produce many details about Egypt’s efficiency in dealing with this incident.”
Regarding his expectations for floating the ship, he said, “The bulldozers of the Suez Canal have succeeded in loosening the sand and that the floatation will depend on the tide of the sea, which occurs every 6 hours and there is a high and another low tide, and therefore experts in the Suez Canal are the most capable of determining the appropriate time.”
