The small town of Palma in northeastern Mozambique, a few dozen kilometers from a huge gas project run by the French company Total, fell by gunmen after more than 48 hours of fighting.
Thousands of people continued to flee the town on Sunday, and it is feared that dozens of them will be killed at the hands of jihadists who took control of the coastal town on Friday night and Saturday, according to several sources and witnesses.
“More than a hundred people are missing,” Agence France-Presse reported, quoting Martin Eoy, a researcher at the Institute for Security Studies in Pretoria, adding that “the situation is still foggy.”
Jihadists attacked the town on three fronts, and they have been spreading terror since 2017 in Cabo Delgado province, which borders Tanzania.
Until recently, the town counted 75,000 people, before thousands of them were displaced.
Some fled to the forests to hide, while others took to the beaches and fled by boat, and others fled the town on foot or in cars and headed to the site of the mega gas project.
In recent years, Palma, on the Indian Ocean, has witnessed waves of exodus of residents fleeing violence by jihadists.
