Julie Bowen is set to reprise her role in the upcoming Happy Gilmore sequel, but the actress recently revealed she had resigned herself to not being invited back after a rumor from an unlikely source: her own son.
During an appearance on The View, the Modern Family alum shared that her son bluntly informed her, “‘Bruh, they’re making a sequel and you’re not in it.'” He reportedly added that Sydney Sweeney had been cast instead and then cheekily asked if his mother could still get him on the set.
Bowen explained that she held no hard feelings and expressed her deep respect for Adam Sandler. “I love Adam, and he’s gonna do what he’s gonna do,” she said. “I didn’t even think they were making a sequel, so when he called and was like, ‘Would you do it?’ I was like, ‘Duh!'”
When Sandler officially offered her the role of his on-screen love interest, Virginia Venit, Bowen humorously recounted asking him, “‘Yes, but isn’t Sydney Sweeney doing it?'”
The actress had previously voiced doubts about her return on the Inside of You podcast, speculating that the sequel would likely feature a younger love interest. “I didn’t think they’d bring me back at all,” she admitted at the time. “He’s got to have a younger woman in this one.”
While Netflix is keeping most plot details for Happy Gilmore 2 confidential, several original cast members are confirmed to return, including Christopher McDonald and Ben Stiller. New additions to the cast include musician Bad Bunny (Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) and Sandler’s daughters, Sadie and Sunny Sandler.
