A public feud erupted between Nicki Minaj and SZA on Tuesday, July 15, after Minaj launched a series of attacks on social media targeting the Grammy-winning singer’s appearance, music, and career achievements.
The dispute began after Minaj claimed on X that she was being “bullied” by SZA’s manager and Top Dawg Entertainment president, Terrence “Punch” Henderson. Shortly after, SZA posted, “don’t take the bait lol silly goose,” which Minaj apparently interpreted as a subtweet aimed at her.
The post prompted a string of profanity-laced insults from the 42-year-old rapper. “Go draw your freckles back on bookie,” Minaj wrote in a reply to SZA, 35, later adding that the “Kill Bill” artist was “looking & sounding like she got stung” by a bee.
Minaj also belittled the singer’s professional impact, writing, “SZA if every song you’ve ever done vanished right now the music business wouldn’t even miss you. I’ve been to countries that never heard of you.”
The attacks extended to SZA’s critically acclaimed 2022 album, “SOS.” Earlier that day, SZA had celebrated the album becoming the longest-running release by a Black artist in the Billboard 200’s Top 10, surpassing Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” Minaj dismissed the accomplishment, accusing SZA of gaming the system. She claimed SZA “put out a whole new album as a deluxe to an already existing album… so the original album could break records,” questioning the singer’s “morals & integrity.”
SZA expressed frustration with the tirade, stating she “wasn’t even talking about or to anyone.” She also engaged with Minaj’s fanbase, known as the “Barbz,” and contrasted the online conflict with her real-world success.
“I get bullied by millions online every day then step … out onna (sic) packed stadium tour where ppl show me REAL love . IN REAL LIFE,” wrote the singer, who is currently on the international leg of her Grand National tour with Kendrick Lamar. “My parents are healthy and I’m the most successful I ever been.”
