Ahead of its scheduled San Diego Comic-Con Hall H panel, Disney has released a new trailer for “Tron: Ares,” the upcoming sequel from director Joachim Rønning. The film is the latest installment in the science-fiction franchise that began with the groundbreaking 1982 movie “Tron.”
Following the events of 2010’s “Tron: Legacy,” the new film centers on Ares (Jared Leto), a highly sophisticated program from the digital realm who crosses over into the human world on what is described as a “dangerous mission.” This event marks humanity’s first encounter with A.I. beings in the series, reversing the franchise’s long-standing premise of humans journeying into the computer world.
Leto is joined by an ensemble cast that includes Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson. Both Peters and Anderson portray characters with the surname Dillinger, a name that will be familiar to long-time fans of the franchise. In a notable development, Jeff Bridges is confirmed to return as Kevin Flynn, the protagonist of the original film. The character’s return is particularly intriguing, as he and his digital counterpart Clu appeared to have been destroyed at the end of “Tron: Legacy.”
Adding to the film’s anticipation, the soundtrack is being composed by the band Nine Inch Nails. While members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have scored numerous acclaimed projects, this marks a significant return to using their band’s moniker for a film score. The new trailer features a sample of the first single from the soundtrack, titled “As Alive As You Need Me to Be.”
More details about the project are expected to be announced following next week’s Comic-Con presentation.
“Tron: Ares” is set to release in theaters on October 10.
