A senior Commonwealth Bank executive, Christopher James McCann, who was facing charges of procuring underage girls for sex, has been found dead in the Gold Coast hinterland. Police confirmed the 50-year-old was discovered in Springbrook National Park on Wednesday.
Mr. McCann had recently been extradited from Sydney to Queensland to face a charge of using the internet to procure a child under 16. He was accused of arranging for an 18-year-old sex worker to bring two girls, aged 14 and 15, to his room at the Sofitel Hotel in Brisbane during a trip in May. Court documents alleged that while the woman and the two girls arrived at the hotel, Mr. McCann did not open the door and a staff member intervened.
The case unfolded last week with Mr. McCann’s arrest in Sydney. He appeared at the Central Local Court, where an application to extradite him was granted after his own bail application was refused. Magistrate Clare Farnan described the allegations against him as “very serious.”
After being transported to Brisbane, Mr. McCann appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday and was granted bail. His release came with strict conditions, including residing with a friend on the Gold Coast, reporting to police weekly, observing an overnight curfew, and having no contact with individuals under 18, with an exception for his two sons. He was scheduled to reappear in court on August 4.
Mr. McCann, who had worked in the bank’s finance team and had no prior criminal history, was dismissed from his position after the allegations were made public.
Queensland Police have stated the death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner. Mr. McCann’s defense attorney has been contacted for comment.
