Cody Simpson performed above expectations in his first race at the Australian Swimming Trials in Adelaide on Tuesday.
The pop-star-turned-swimmer was beaming as he walked out of the pool complex to speak to media after winning his heat in the men’s 100 metre freestyle.
‘I’m pretty stoked!’ the 24-year-old said in an interview with Nine News.

Cody’s time of 50.22 shattered his previous personal best in the event but wasn’t enough to qualify for the final.
‘Considering 100 free [style] is a fun event for me, I just wanted to get in the water and see how the training has done and I’m super happy with it,’ he said.
‘I feel amazing, it’s really nice to get one under my belt before the 100 butterfly. It definitely went a lot quicker than I thought it would.’
The 100 metre butterfly is Cody’s pet event – the trials are scheduled to take place on Thursday.

And for Cody, it’s not just the element of winning which has inspired him to show up.
‘It’s really amazing to be around so many incredible swimmers… guys that I’ve known since they were little that I used to race when we were little,’ he said.
‘Seeing them breaking record left, right and centre. Just being around it all, the energy is unreal.’
His comments come following a nail-biting race on Tuesday.
Cody completed his 100 metre freestyle heat in 50.22, good enough to rank 23rd overall. Olympic gold medalist Kyle Chambers notched the fastest time with 48.58 seconds.

Following his win, sports journalist Phil Lutton Tweeted: ‘Can confirm @CodySimpson was over the moon with his first swim at #2021AusTrials. Great warm up for his main event the 100m fly.’
Cody looked fit as a fiddle, showcasing his gym-honed physique in skin-tight black swimming shorts.

Ever the good sportman, he was seen giving a friendly high-five to a competitor in the adjacent lane immediately after the race.
Cody gave up his singing career last year to focus on his childhood passion of swimming, and hopes to compete in the Tokyo 2021 Olympics.

He has been training under the watchful eye of Olympic swimming coach Brett Hawke.
In April, Cody suffered a minor setback after placed ninth in his 50 metre butterfly heat at the Australian National Championships, with a time of 24.79 seconds.
Speaking to News Corp at the time, he said he was ‘dusting himself off’ following the defeat.

He suggested his two weeks in quarantine could have contributed to the loss.
‘I probably would have liked to have gone a little quicker, but it was the first race back in a long time and I’ve only just come out of quarantine,’ he said.
‘Two weeks out of the water sets you back quite a while, but I had to get through the quarantine at some point.’
‘I just wanted to get up and at least do the 50m to dust myself off.’
