A Victorian couple who fled the state during its strict Covid-19 lockdown and went on an interstate road trip into Queensland have both been fined for bringing the virus into the Sunshine State.
The pair escaped Victoria’s ‘circuit breaker’ lockdown on June 1 and went on a 1,900km road trip through regional communities in NSW before arriving in Queensland on June 5.
The woman, 44, tested positive to the virus on June 9 and authorities confirmed her husband, 48, had also contracted the virus the next day.
Queensland Police said on Friday the couple – who were moving for work – deliberately provided false information to the state’s authorities on their border declarations.
The couple have both been fined $4,003 for breaching the Queensland chief health officer’s directions but avoided the maximum penalty of six months in jail.

‘Police will allege the duo travelled into Queensland on June 5, via Goondiwindi after having been in Victoria and deliberately provided false information to obtain a Queensland Border Declaration Pass ‘G’ pass,’ a police spokesman said.
About 400 people were forced into isolation and are getting tested as a result of the couple’s arrival on Saturday after a road trip from Melton in Melbourne, through NSW and into Queensland.
They are known to have visited sites in Goondiwindi, Toowoomba and the southern Sunshine Coast.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said their interstate trip put Queenslanders at risk and the pair should have stayed in Victoria.
‘Everyone needs to do the right thing. There was a lockdown on… they shouldn’t have left Victoria. It just puts people at risk,’ she said.
