The NBA has fined Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid $35,000 for “escalating” an on-court altercation with Atlanta Hawks forward John Collins in Game 6 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series.
In announcing Embiid’s punishment, the league said he pursued Collins “in an unsportsmanlike manner” after the two became entangled under the Sixers basket with just over four minutes remaining in the game.
Both Embiid and Collins received technical fouls on the play as the Sixers eventually prevailed 104-99 to force a decisive seventh game.
Embiid also failed to comply with an NBA Security interview after the game, the league said in a news release.
The incident occurred after Embiid fell on top of Collins, who then shoved Embiid. Both players got up, and Embiid walked toward Collins with his arms outstretched as the two moved off the court and under the basket.
In addition, Hawks forward Bruno Fernando has been suspended one game without pay for leaving the bench area during the incident. He will not be eligible to play in Game 7 Sunday in Philadelphia.
